about

Here lies a set of vintage, prime-time Kent in full flight. Prepare to smile.

Kent shines throughout this electrifying set, pulled from various 1980s recording sessions from Michigan, Ohio, and California, but all unified by the exuberant, melody-based, backbeat-driven, big guitar and big hooks approach that is the Kent Sound Experience MO.

Though some of the studios from which these tracks emerged were relatively primitive, wonderful recording work is on display, especially by Jon Dwyer, with his miraculously clean, punchy, well-separated capture on the opening track 'Candlelight;' by Geoff Michael on a number of tracks; by Howard Benson on 'Saccharine,' the charming pre-production sessions demo of a song that criminally, was not included on Kent's only national release, the 1987 Passport/Paradox release 'Long Distance Calling.'

Dave Massey also shines on his 2nd KL outing, a six song session represented here by heartland power-pop explosion 'Golden Days.' Pete Thomas also weighs in admirably, manning the 2nd generation Tascam Porta-Studio with great acumen on the oft-overlooked gem 'Cheerleader.'

This is Kent at his finest, freshest, and most exuberant. Highly inventive, inspired, and turbo-charged, what you have here in your hands is midwestern pure-pop heaven, a mutation poured from a blender that perhaps mixes ingredients of early-period British Invasion, mid-period Lovin' Spoonful, and late-period Grassroots.

As Kent was Influenced by much, but always mostly by The Golden Age of A.M Radio ('65-'73), the ghosts of a thousand one hit wonders whisper and shout through these ten hymns to the rock 'n roll rush.

Springsteenian faith and enthusiasm, Costelloesque punk-bubblegum revisionism, heartland romanticism, power-pop echoes and one-hit-wonder, one-last-shot-give-it-all-you-got-ism are all on mighty display within the grooves of this artfully titled collection. Essential. Enjoy.
